Whether you are active in site security, event security, crowd control, mobile surveillance or other security services: you’re often on your feet for long shifts, switching between walking and standing, and you need to be ready to act quickly at any moment. One shift you’re working indoors, the next outdoors. Sometimes in dry conditions, sometimes in rain or on wet surfaces. You wear your shoes for hours at a time, often without many breaks. That places different demands on your safety footwear. The right choice depends on your tasks, environment and the pace at which you work. What does this job require from your safety shoes? Protection and stability In Security & defence, safety always comes first. Reinforced toe caps and durable materials protect your feet against impact and long-term strain. For tasks that require extra support, higher models offer more stability around the ankle and midfoot. Because you work on different surfaces — such as smooth floors, wet paving or grass — reliable grip is essential. High-quality slip-resistant outsoles help you stay stable, even during unexpected movements or quick changes of direction. For work in the dark or in low-visibility conditions, reflective details provide additional safety. Comfort during long shifts In this sector, long working days are the norm. That’s why wearing comfort isn’t a luxury — it’s a basic requirement. Padded areas, comfortable insoles and materials that adapt to the shape of your foot help prevent pressure points. Outsoles with cushioning and energy return support you during prolonged walking and standing. That way, your feet stay less fatigued and you remain sharp until the end of your shift. Practical and professional Ease of use matters. Quick on-and-off, easy cleaning and a fit that feels right straight away make a real difference in daily practice. And let’s not forget appearance. In many security roles, a professional and presentable look is part of the job. That’s why some models feature a more business-like design, without compromising on safety or comfort. In certain security functions, you regularly pass through detection gates or metal detectors. In that case, it’s practical if your safety shoes contain no metal. Metal-free models prevent unnecessary checks and delays. That makes them a smart choice for working at airports, in distribution centres or at high-security locations. Discover when metal-free safety shoes are the right choice. OUR TOP 5 SHOES FOR SECURITY AND DEFENCE Fornax S3 An extra-high safety shoe for maximum protection and support. Installation engineering is all about designing, installing, maintaining and repairing technical systems. Think of heating, ventilation, electrical installations, plumbing and sustainable energy systems. Many different professionals work in this sector, such as installation engineers, service technicians, HVAC specialists, electricians, panel builders and maintenance engineers. Work planners and project managers are also part of this field. What all these professions have in common is that you move a lot, frequently change posture and work in constantly changing conditions. One day you’re indoors with dry installations, the next day you’re outside on a construction site, on a ladder or in a crawl space. That calls for safety shoes that truly match what you do. That’s why there is no single “best” safety shoe for installation engineering. The right choice depends on your working day, your environment and the risks involved. Do you mainly work indoors in dry conditions? Then a lighter model with S1P(S) certification may be ideal. Do you often work outdoors or on construction sites? Then a water-resistant S3(S) shoe offers extra security. Below, we list the key features of good safety shoes for installation engineering. This makes it easier to choose the safety shoe that suits you best. Electrical safety: antistatic and ESD Do you work with electrical installations or sensitive equipment? Then electrical safety is essential. Almost all modern safety shoes are antistatic. This means that built-up static electricity is discharged through the shoe, preventing shocks. Do you work with sensitive electronics, microchips or in environments where sparking poses a risk? Then a shoe with ESD protection is recommended. ESD shoes provide controlled discharge of electrical charge between you and the ground. This protects both you and the equipment you are working with. Metal-free working: lighter and more practical Many installers nowadays choose metal-free safety shoes. Not because steel is unsafe, but because modern alternatives can be smarter in use. Metal-free shoes feature a composite toe cap and a non-metal anti-perforation midsole. This often makes the shoe lighter and more comfortable, especially if you walk or kneel a lot. For work in ESD environments, metal-free is often a logical choice as well. Grip: safe footing on any surface Good grip is indispensable in installation engineering. You work on smooth floors, wet surfaces, concrete, tiles or steel. The outsole of your safety shoe makes the difference here. Just like car tyres have different tread patterns, safety shoes are equipped with soles designed for specific working conditions. When choosing, look not only at slip resistance (SR), but also at how the sole behaves when turning, walking and standing. Ladder grip: safety at height Do you regularly work on ladders or scaffolding? Then ladder grip is an important point of attention. Shoes with a clearly defined heel offer more stability and grip on ladder rungs. This feels more secure and reduces the risk of slipping, especially when working at height. Protection for kneeling work: scuff cap A lot of installation work takes place close to the ground. If you kneel often, the toe area of your shoe takes a lot of wear. A scuff cap protects this vulnerable part of the shoe. The result: less wear, a longer lifespan and shoes that stay safe and presentable for longer. I ndoors or outdoors? Think about water resistance Do you mainly work outdoors, for example installing solar panels, heat pumps or piping? Then it’s wise to choose a shoe that keeps water out. Safety shoes with S3 or S3S certification have a water-resistant upper that keeps your feet dry in rain or wet conditions. Do you mostly work indoors? Then a lighter S1P(S), sportier model with more ventilation may be more comfortable. OUR TOP 5 SHOES FOR INSTALLATION ENGINEERING E-BOUNCE S3S Black-orange Light, flexible and designed to move with you. The E-BOUNCE S3S is metal-free, features ESD protection and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor work. Ideal for installers who walk a lot, kneel frequently and often change working posture. Crossforce Fly high Robust and reliable at height. The CrossForce Fly high is an S3S shoe with ladder grip for extra stability on ladders and a scuff cap to protect the toe during kneeling work. With ESD protection and a secure fit for intensive working days. Everon 2.0 DISC Metal-free, with ESD protection and designed for comfort during long days — that’s the Everon 2.0 DISC . Featuring ladder grip, a scuff cap and an improved fit. Thanks to the DISC closure, you can put the shoe on and take it off quickly — ideal if you frequently change workplaces. E-BOUNCE S1PS White-lime Sporty, lightweight and ideal for dry indoor environments. They’re lightweight, comfortable to wear and ideal for workplaces with security scanners or environments where electrical safety matters. But does metal-free automatically mean better? No. It simply means the shoe is constructed differently — and therefore better suited to certain types of work. Want to know what metal-free safety shoes really are, when to choose them and when steel is still the smarter option? Keep reading. What is a metal-free safety shoe? A metal-free safety shoe contains no metal components at all. That means no steel toe cap, but a toe cap made from composite, fibreglass or modern nano-materials; no steel midsole, but a flexible, metal-free midsole that protects against sharp objects; and often no metal parts in laces, eyelets or fastenings either — these are replaced by lightweight alternatives. Important to know: a metal-free shoe is just as safe as a shoe with steel, as long as it meets European safety standards. The safety doesn’t come from the material itself, but from the way the shoe is engineered and tested. Why do many people choose metal-free? No issues with security scanners In sectors such as security, logistics, distribution centres or airports, you pass through detection systems all day long. No alarms, no delays — simple and efficient. Less sensitivity to cold Metal conducts cold quickly. Composite or nano toe caps don’t. So if you work outdoors or in cooled areas, your feet often stay warmer and feel more comfortable. Lighter and more flexible Modern metal-free toe caps and midsoles are lighter and more flexible. You feel the difference especially on long workdays with lots of walking, bending or kneeling. No conduction risk when working with electricity When working near electrical installations, metal can pose additional risks. Metal-free shoes don’t conduct electricity, making them popular among electricians, technicians and maintenance teams. More and more choice Metal-free shoes are no longer a niche. At EMMA you’ll find high and low models, versions with or without DISC fastening, sporty or classic styles — including models from collections such as E-BOUNCE, CrossForce, Evoke/Everon and various sporty sneakers. OUR TOP 5 METAL-FREE SAFETY SHOES E-BOUNCE Black/lime With E-BOUNCE you combine sporty comfort with metal-free safety. The lightweight shoe feels energetic thanks to its responsive sole , which absorbs impact and returns energy with every step. The metal-free construction lets you pass security gates without any delay, and with S1PS protection and extreme grip, it’s an ideal shoe for logistics, order picking and production halls where you cover many steps each day. Crossforce Flex CrossForce Flex gives you stability and freedom of movement in one. The metal-free toe cap and midsole make the shoe flexible and surprisingly light, without compromising safety. The DISC closure is a safe alternative to laces, easy to operate with one hand and quick to put on and take off. The ESD properties make it suitable for environments where electrostatic discharge control matters. Perfect for warehouses, assembly work and distribution centres. Everon 2.0 DISC Everon 2.0 DISC is built for speed and comfort. Thanks to its metal-free construction, the shoe feels light and smooth — ideal for jobs with lots of walking or bending. ESD protection prevents unwanted static discharge, and the DISC system allows fast, even tightening. Combined with a breathable upper and solid S3S protection, this is a smart choice for modern logistics, technical services and high-security locations. Boston Boston is a sporty safety shoe that looks like a sneaker but performs like a work shoe. The metal-free toe cap and midsole keep the weight low and allow natural foot movement. This makes Boston ideal for technicians, warehouse staff and anyone looking for a smooth, flexible shoe that won’t trigger security scanners. . Clay Clay is a sturdy yet comfortable work shoe that, thanks to its metal-free protection, feels lighter than traditional models. The flexible sole moves naturally with the foot, and its ESD protection makes it suitable for environments with sensitive equipment or electrostatic risks. A practical choice for logistics, light industry and jobs that require plenty of walking.

Tue, 13 Jan 2026 14:50:00 +0100

Warm and dry feet with EMMA Safety Footwear

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/warm-and-dry-feet-with-emma-safety-footwear

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/warm-and-dry-feet-with-emma-safety-footwear

We’re approaching winter. And that combination is exactly what drives Joost van Verseveld. Since October 2025, Joost has been working as Product Development Manager Footwear. With a background in sneakers and outdoor footwear, he knows better than anyone how design and comfort can strengthen each other. Joost grew up near Amsterdam, right in the middle of street culture and the hip-hop scene — including the clothing that comes with it. “Music and fashion go hand in hand for me. With an iconic sneaker store around the corner, I was exposed to the coolest shoes when I was just a kid. That’s where my ‘sneaker addiction’ began. Even my current hobbies — street food cooking, barbecuing and producing electronic music — come from that world.” Off to America! Joost chose a creative study: Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. “But in practice, I mainly designed functional devices. In this technical environment, shoes were viewed as fashion items. While in reality, footwear is pure engineering! Every detail requires precision and craftsmanship.” So Joost continued with a Master’s in Strategic Product Design, choosing his own path. “I graduated at a major American safety footwear brand. When I was allowed to visit the factory in the US for the first time and saw the production process with my own eyes, my love for footwear grew even stronger!” “When I visited the factory in America for the first time and saw the production process with my own eyes, my love for footwear only grew stronger!” A flourishing career Joost built a successful career in the footwear industry. At renowned brands, he worked on product development: from creative concepts to technical production. He collaborated with major fashion brands for catwalk shows, led creative direction for a new outdoor walking brand, contributed to several start-ups, presented a sneaker collection in Paris, worked with factories in China and crafted shoes in fashion capital Italy. “As a footwear fanatic, it was incredible to be part of that world.” The turning point What Joost will never forget is his collaboration with a foundation for people with intellectual disabilities. “My boss at the time wanted to give these people a meaningful role in society. His dream? To keep the foundation running with the revenue from its own footwear line, while also offering participants a valuable daytime activity.” The team organised joint brainstorming sessions and workshops with the participants to create new colourways and products. And that changed everything for Joost. “After years in the ‘superficial’ fashion industry, I wanted my work to have more meaning. Not just making beautiful products but contributing something to society.” “I wanted my work to have more meaning. Not just creating beautiful products, but contributing to society.” From sneakers to safety After a short return to the outdoor performance industry, EMMA Safety Footwear reached out. “I hadn’t thought about safety footwear in years, but my curiosity was sparked immediately. Everything fell into place: the personal and professional connection with Elroy Bongers, the social aspect of the workshop and the sustainability ambitions.” But what appealed to him most was the fact that EMMA still produces in the Netherlands. “A unique piece of Dutch pride. The factory, the craft, the people behind it — something to be genuinely proud of. I want to preserve that, and renew it.” Limburg hospitality When Joost visited EMMA for the first time, his designer heart skipped a beat. As Product Development Manager Footwear, he is fortunate to spend much more time there now. “I still live in Amsterdam, so Kerkrade is quite a distance. But every time I’m there, I’m welcomed with warmth. You can feel the Limburg hospitality. Staying connected with the people in the factory is essential for building a bond — and for developing a strong brand feeling.” That’s why Joost wants to be at EMMA more often. “As I’m responsible for the entire collection — from range planning and market research to design and development — I want to stay close to the making process.” Potential With his extensive sneaker experience, Joost hopes to help shift the world of safety footwear. “During my studies I worked at IKEA in the warehouse. We wore classic safety shoes back then. When sneakers with safety toecaps hit the market, it was a revelation! That feeling is what I now want to bring — multiplied — to EMMA’s collection.” There is enormous potential in safety footwear, he says. “Work shoes and sneakers are growing closer together. And that’s where my strength lies: combining engineering with style!”

Tue, 18 Nov 2025 10:08:00 +0100

Top 5 Heavy-Duty Safety Shoes

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/discover-the-top-5-heavy-duty-safety-shoes

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/discover-the-top-5-heavy-duty-safety-shoes

For hard workers who take their job and safety seriously In a working environment with machines constantly coming and going, heavy materials being moved, sparks flying and wet or slippery floors, you wear safety shoes. In fact, before Koen officially joined the company, he was an intern. During his graduate studies, he focused on sustainability, which included materials research. An interesting theme, which he builds on in his current role. "For my graduate internship, I researched the sustainability of safety shoes," Koen explains. "My goal was to design a safety shoe with half the CO2 emissions of the standard model. So I started looking for alternative materials and designed a new model. Something that perfectly suited my degree in 'Industrial Product Design'. The outcome? By looking creatively at sustainability and recycling, it is actually possible to reduce CO2!" Materials Library The materials research Koen conducted for his graduate internship is extremely valuable to EMMA. "EMMA really needs a materials library. That's why they offered me a job as a Junior Product Developer: I have all the knowledge and information thanks to my internship assignment." In his new role, Koen is responsible for setting up the materials library. "There's 2 parts to it," he explains. "On the one hand digital: I am working on a large database of all the materials EMMA uses or might use in the future, and adding the technical properties of the materials. On the other hand, I also shape the physical materials library. I bring all the materials in so we can see and feel them. That's handy for our development department, but we also use it as a kind of showroom for visitors. That way, they can see what we are working on!" "I bring all the materials in so we can see and feel them. That's handy for our development department, but we also use it as a kind of showroom for visitors". Diverse work As a Junior Product Developer, Koen is not just busy with materials. He provides support to the lead designers, contributes to new designs and is also working on a new proposal for 'Safety for Everyone'. "I will be revamping our offering in semi-orthopaedic adjustments and the related service. It's precisely the diverse work that made me say "yes" to EMMA's offer immediately. We were always told in school that we would only design products in the future, but what I do now is much more varied. And of course, the fact that EMMA is within cycling distance of my hometown of Landgraaf is also a nice bonus!" More time for hobbies The fact that Koen now has a permanent job at EMMA also has private benefits for him. "When I was a student, I had a side job on Saturdays. That meant I only had evenings through the week and Sundays for hobbies. One evening a week I volunteer at Jong Nederland, leading about 25 girls aged 10/11. The other nights I can often be found at the gym. Because my weekends are now completely free, I've got more time for the other sports I love. I like the challenge of mountain biking, trail running and bouldering. I also enjoy hiking with my girlfriend; I'm a real outdoorsman and love adventure!"

Wed, 22 Oct 2025 10:08:00 +0200

EMMA IS Koen Heijnen

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-koen-heijnen-en

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-koen-heijnen-en

Freerunner Koen Heijnen hails from Central Limburg and is 27 years old and 1.65 metres tall. However, when jumping, he can easily clock distances of 3.20 metres. Koen is a professional freerunner, which is why EMMA Safety Footwear chose him as the face of the E-BOUNCE campaign. He's urban, dynamic and sporty. Just like the new E-BOUNCE collection! "I was 16 when I was introduced to freerunning at my secondary school's sports day. The trainer at the time saw a 'monkey' in me and invited me to come see what it was all about. Freerunning was not really a well-known sport at the time but I was immediately drawn to it and it quickly became my sport." And he's certainly made a success of it. Koen became European champion in April of this year and finished 10th at the World Championships in August. At the age of 27, he already has quite a few titles to his name! Koen secretly dreams of an Olympic career. "Unfortunately, freerunning is not yet an Olympic sport. This is because our discipline falls under gymnastics. Only seven gymnastics disciplines are allowed to compete and we're the eighth. Should freerunning become an Olympic sport, it would affect other events, such as the trampoline or beam. That's why I think we don't have much chance of it happening. But because we're so 'urban', I could see us becoming one of the demonstration sports at the 2028 Olympic Games." Pushing boundaries From the moment Koen started freerunning, he also regularly helped his trainer with the lessons. “That's why I enrolled in the CIOS sports leaders training course when I was 18. It's where I learned how to be a good teacher and the best ways to interact with children. I have built my whole life around freerunning because now my trainer is my boss and teaching is my job. I teach over 25 lessons a week to children between the ages of 6 and 18. One great thing about freerunning is that it gets children moving more. But perhaps more importantly, it also helps with pushing boundaries, building self-confidence, overcoming fears and learning teamwork. These are all valuable skills that benefit children for the rest of their lives." Safety comes first! Koen works for Minded Motion, the largest freerunning organisation in South Holland. He and his colleagues teach nearly 2,000 freerunners at 30 different locations in Brabant and Limburg. "We train indoors because we can use airbags and mats to safely try out jumps and moves. Just like any workplace, safety is also essential in freerunning. We only progress to the outdoors once we completely master a jump. And this involves other safety risks. Should a stone break off somewhere, a wall collapse or we misjudge the height of a building, the consequences could be devastating. That's why we always do an environmental analysis and risk assessment. What are the risks? What could happen? What's my plan if something does go wrong? I also teach this to my students: do a triple check because safety comes first!" Incredibly relaxed In addition to providing freerunning classes, Minded Motion freerunners are also featured in videos, photo shoots, social media and modelling work. Koen: "Companies often want to add something 'cool' to their campaigns. This could be a chase or a somersault, for example. We're perfect for that because we are so good at freerunning. So my job includes stunt work and shoots for clothing or sports brands." EMMA Safety Footwear is one such brand. "I have spent hours at a time 'bouncing' around the city while wearing EMMA safety shoes and can confidently say that if I can freerun on them all day, it really must be a light and comfortable shoe! I wish safety shoes like this had been around sooner. I once did an internship on a construction site and had to wear those clunky, heavy work shoes for safety reasons. They looked awful and just got in the way. If I could have worn a safety shoe from the EMMA E-BOUNCE collection back then, I would have had much more energy in my steps. E-BOUNCE is comfortable and feels like a sneaker: sporty and casual. Compared to other work shoes, the E-BOUNCE is super relaxed."

Mon, 20 Oct 2025 10:08:00 +0200

EMMA IS Niels Verheijen

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-niels-verheijen-en

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-niels-verheijen-en

Account Manager South-West Netherlands Niels is no stranger to the EMMA family, having worked for us for three years 20 years ago. Now he is 'back on his former turf' and responsible for dealer contact in his region. He also advises large companies on the right footwear. Niels first came across Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) about 25 years ago. Following his internship, he was offered a job with an importer of workwear and work gloves. He liked that sector, and ended up staying in it for 18 years straight, going through several employers. EMMA Safety Footwear was one of them. "From 2005 to 2008, I worked at EMMA in field sales. I visited end users and advised them on our safety shoes. It was a fun time." Nevertheless, Niels left to work for an importer of teleshopping articles. "That gave me new insights and fresh ideas." Until he was itching again for a career move in the spring of 2025. "The heart wants what it wants, because when I saw the account manager job opening at EMMA Safety Footwear, I applied straight away." Back on familiar ground Already at the first interviews, Niels ran into colleagues from his previous stint, which immediately made him feel welcome again. "I have always looked back fondly on my time at EMMA. I like the informal atmosphere at EMMA and the close contact with colleagues means that lines of communication are short. EMMA's wide range of products also really appeals to me; we have the right shoe for everyone and every organisation. So I was happy to go back." The team was also keen to have Niels back on board, so it was a rapid changeover. "I've been Account Manager South-West Netherlands since 1 September. I spend about 80% of my time 'out of the office' in this role. One day I'm working on dealer relations, the next day I'm advising end users (large companies with more than 250 employees). I enjoy speaking to different people and visiting different companies. Fortunately, Zundert - where I live - is right in the middle of my work area." Renowned A-brand As an account manager, Niels is the point of contact for dealers and end users in his region. "I take a proactive approach. If someone has questions about a product, wants to know more about a standard or has a complaint, they can really count on me." In his role, Niels advises buyers, product specialists and sales departments on EMMA's safety footwear. "EMMA is a reputable A-brand offering high quality products. We provide customised work and service is our top priority. I convey this message to dealers, technical wholesalers and PPE specialists." Niels also trains staff. "There are a lot of developments at EMMA. Many existing shoes have been revamped, designs added to the collection and there is still a lot in the pipeline. During a training session, I show new models and explain which shoe is suitable for which industry. I also make selections for specific clients and demonstrate how we tackle workplace risks with EMMA products." Big football fan Training and tackling, it's no coincidence that Niels uses these terms in his communication. After all, he is a big football fan. He can be found on the pitch every Friday night with friends. Socialising in the canteen afterwards is just as important. Niels is also a loyal supporter of NAC Breda. He has a season ticket and attends every home game. "It's actually a day-out with my group of friends every 2 weeks." The scarce free time that is left over is then spent on jogging and his family. "My wife and I regularly visit an amusement park or museum with our daughters, ending up on a cosy terrace."

Sat, 18 Oct 2025 14:08:00 +0200

New by EMMA: E-BOUNCE

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/new-by-emma-e-bounce-en

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/new-by-emma-e-bounce-en

The new E-BOUNCE from EMMA is here. Yet in 2012, she joined EMMA as a product designer. “They were looking for someone with product experience. During the interview I said, ‘If I can stitch a B-cup, I can stitch a shoe.’” And she was right. With a background in lingerie design, orthopedic footwear and even strollers, EMMA turned out to be the perfect place to bring it all together. “I love thinking things up, designing them and then actually making them. From sketch to stitch.” Unlike most, Nancy not only designs the shoes—she also creates the patterns herself. “Normally that’s two separate jobs. I do both.” “Creativity doesn’t clock out at five” Nancy doesn’t just design at work—she creates all the time. “I restore old furniture, repurpose materials, and upholster stools with old EMMA clothing. Some people ask, ‘What are you doing with that junk?’ But I see value in giving things a second life. I just can’t sit still. Creativity doesn’t clock out at five.” For the people on the floor What makes her proud? “The sneaker line I once picked up—Dave, Jordan, Clyde—they’re still in the collection. And the Frontier model, which I literally rebuilt from scratch using orthopedic techniques. These days I’m focused on improving the Office Line: making sure the lasts are spot on and easier to produce. That matters—for the people who actually build the shoes. They’re the ones who make it all possible.” Paulo Fortes – The fresh perspective “Safety shoes are new territory for me” “My journey to EMMA wasn’t exactly a straight line,” Paulo smiles. Born in Mozambique, raised in Portugal, with stops in the UK and Vietnam before landing in the Netherlands. “I’ve worked all over—from high fashion to performance sneakers. But safety shoes? That’s new to me. And that’s what makes it exciting.” So much potential Since April 2025, Paulo has been part of the EMMA design team. “There’s huge potential here. But also a lot of work to be done. Processes need to be faster and more modern. The market moves quickly—especially in sneakers. We have to be more agile and open to change.” With experience at brands like New Balance and Ted Baker, Paulo brings a sharp outsider’s eye. “I approach it from the outside in: What’s the competition doing? What do end users really need? And how can we do that better—sustainably?” From stories to tech: inspiration is everywhere “There has to be a story behind the product,” Paulo says. “What problem are you solving for the wearer? You need to stay curious, keep your eyes and ears open. Inspiration can come from anywhere. And I love new tech—like AI tools, which I use in my process. Nancy sticks with pencil and paper. Totally different styles, but they complement each other perfectly.” Stronger together Collaboration from sketch to shop floor “Nancy and I are total opposites—and that’s exactly why it works,” says Paulo. Nancy adds: “I’m more about craftsmanship, he’s all about innovation.” They understand each other quickly and work towards the same goal—just with different approaches. Both believe strongly in collaboration, not just with each other but with colleagues on the shop floor. “Production is our foundation,” Nancy emphasizes. “If it doesn’t work there, it doesn’t work anywhere.” Paulo agrees: “Our decisions have to look good, but also be practical and sustainable.” Made in Holland, with pride Together, they’re working on the new Office Line. “A classic upper with a modern outsole—made in the Netherlands. That’s our strength,” Paulo says. And the future? “A new women’s model, a fresh sneaker collection, and continued improvements to the Office Line. It takes time, but we’re making progress.” Nancy smiles: “We’re building great things. With heart and skill. Always with the people in mind—both those who wear our shoes, and those who make them.”

Mon, 15 Sep 2025 14:20:00 +0200

Sporty safety shoes for comfort and style

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/discover-the-top-5-sporty-safety-shoes

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/discover-the-top-5-sporty-safety-shoes

Try these top 5 sporty safety shoes! Comfort is key, but a great look is a bonus. Fortunately, there are plenty of sporty models that combine the properties of work shoes with the look and comfort of sneakers. You'll even want to wear them after work! In the past, you probably saw safety shoes as something bulky and cumbersome. Not only are such heavy shoes tiring for your feet, they are often not very stylish. So, no wonder that sporty safety shoes are becoming more popular. How can that be done? And are these models truly suitable as safety shoes? From sports shoe to fashion icon Sneakers are a wonderful example. The very first sneakers were undoubtedly the ‘Converse All Star’ (1917), originally a sports shoe. It was only when Adidas launched the ‘Adidas Superstar’ (1969) and Nike the running sneaker ‘Nike Cortez’ (1971), that sports shoes became popular. But it was the launch of ‘Nike Air Jordan’ (1985) that turned sneakers into a fashion icon. Did you know that the word ‘sneaker’ comes from the noise these shoes (don't) make when someone runs in them? It refers to the fact they are so quiet in comparison with hard leather shoes. From fashion icon to work shoe These days, in 2025, the sneaker is everywhere. No surprise then, that demand arose for sporty safety shoes. Certainly, in sectors when employees are constantly on the move, such as logistics, technology and retail. DISCOVER THE TOP 5 SPORTY SAFETY SHOES Would you like to experience for yourself how it feels to work a full day without tired feet and in complete safety? Her fluency in both French and Dutch, combined with extensive product knowledge, makes her perfectly suited for this new role. In France, Luxembourg and southern Belgium, EMMA Safety Footwear is still relatively unknown. To rectify this, we appointed a specialist to open up this market in June 2025; Jill de Mol. “A headhunter I know sent me the job advert. I’d been thinking about moving to a manufacturer for two years, so this was the perfect opportunity! I’ve known EMMA for years and have always admired the quality and comfort of the products. In addition, I prefer working with a compact product range, as it keeps things focused.” Most customers in her work area speak French, but that's no problem for Jill. "I was born in Brussels, right on the border of Flanders and Wallonia. That's a bonus, as I'm fluent in both Dutch and French." These skills are also an everyday advantage in her private life. “My partner and I love travelling, often taking city breaks to places like Rome or London. Being able to speak multiple languages always comes in handy!” Breaking into a new region In her new role, Jill visits dealers, wholesalers and end users to introduce them to EMMA’s safety footwear. She reviews sales figures, presents products, and offers testing opportunities. Another interesting part of her job is negotiating prices and delivery terms. “I love the challenge of breaking into a new region and promoting EMMA safety footwear. From my past experience, I know over 100 end users here, but fewer than 5% of the dealers stock EMMA. That’s a huge opportunity for EMMA. Being personally able to exploit this opportunity here from scratch is both exciting and incredibly interesting.” “I see it as a great challenge to tap into a new region and promote EMMA safety footwear there.” PPE Expertise Jill’s background includes a successful career in PPE. "I stumbled into it by chance when I was working for an office supplies company that had PPE as a small part of the range. As safety became more important, the company hired a PPE specialist. I found that role so interesting that I started learning more about it myself.” Over the years, Jill advised companies on PPE usage, sold related products, and trained as a certified prevention advisor. “I know the safety laws, regulations, materials, risks and standards inside out, knowledge that I can now use at EMMA. Thanks to my experience, I can match safety, comfort, and even style preferences to the right footwear. That's incredibly useful in my new role.” “I know the safety laws, regulations, materials, risks and standards inside out, knowledge that I can now use at EMMA. Engaged! Work isn’t the only exciting change in Jill’s life. “Last year my partner proposed at home, completely out of the blue. We both share a love of gastronomy, so we often go out to eat, especially since he once owned a restaurant.” That made it even more of a surprise when he simply proposed at home.” Jill is looking forward to blending her life with her fiancé, 14-year-old stepson, and 8-year-old daughter into one family. “On our weekly Sunday walks, we often daydream about our big day.”

Tue, 19 Aug 2025 13:22:00 +0200

EMMA IS Hans van de Weijer - Safety Footwear Advisor

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-hans-van-de-weijer-safety-footwear-advisor-1

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-hans-van-de-weijer-safety-footwear-advisor-1

Podoscope provides technical support for foot problems Recently, a podoscope was added to his fitting bus: a device that uses mirrors to give a realistic footprint. “It helps us to identify foot problems and give appropriate advice. Often just a small adjustment, like a different shoe or a special footbed, is sufficient to ensure that people step outside with a comfortable safety shoe.” Back to 1978. Hans van de Weijer begins at EMMA in the sewing room. He soon switches to the lasting process, where for more than 20 years he works as foreman. Together with 30 colleagues, he makes some 800 to 900 shoes a day. He continues his career in the technical department, where safety shoes are adjusted for ‘difficult cases’. With a small van, Hans crosses the country, visiting clients. Armed with a shoebox and a notebook. It was the start of EMMA's fitting bus. Twenty years on, Hans still enjoys advising his customers in this ‘travelling shoe shop’. Exercise for energy “I work four days a week and travel all over the Netherlands and Belgium. In order to compensate for the many hours ‘on the road’, I exercise a lot. Running and fitness, for example. That gives me energy, allowing me to easily manage what are sometimes long days. In fact, it's also what makes my job such fun! Sometimes I'm out from 6 am to 6 pm, and sometimes I work just a small part of the day. One day, I'm at a large multinational, the next, I park my bus at an SME. This variety really appeals to me. And the connection with customers! I now have considerably more customer contact than when I worked in the factory and I genuinely contribute to customer satisfaction.” Measuring up safety shoes on site EMMA's fitting bus was launched to ensure a perfect fit for safety shoes. The Safety Footwear Advisors at EMMA Safety Footwear come along to a company's premises. Hans is one of them. “Employees come to my bus one by one for a personal consultation. With specific questions relating to requirements, activities and any foot complaints, I determine which safety shoes are suitable. After that, we carefully measure the foot length, width, instep height and shape. Then, the fitting session begins, in which someone can try on several models and sizes. Ultimately, my goal is for someone to step outside again with the correct, comfortable shoe and a good feeling.” "Ultimately, my goal is for someone to step outside again with the correct, comfortable shoe and a good feeling.” Podoscope identifies foot ailments On-site fitting is efficient and avoids returns. But well-fitting safety shoes are also important to prevent complaints and problems. The standard EMMA range of safety shoes is not suitable for everyone, however. “Some people have a high instep, flat feet or a bump on their big toe (Hallux Valgus). Or they suffer from overpronation, whereby the foot rotates too far inwards when walking. They require an adjustment in their safety shoes, in order to work comfortably. For these people, we have recently added a podoscope to our fitting bus. This is a tool that uses mirrors to give a realistic footprint.” Hans and his colleagues followed special training to decipher these footprints. “There, we learned that you can see on a footprint which shoes are suitable for ailments and which adjustments can help with a foot problem. We apply this knowledge to help people. Often a different shoe, special footbed, support sole or a small adjustment to an existing shoe is enough. Occasionally, we refer someone to a podiatrist. In any case, we always ensure that someone can work both safely and comfortably wearing safety shoes from EMMA Safety Footwear.” "We always ensure that someone can work both safely and comfortably wearing safety shoes from EMMA Safety Footwear.” 100% level The fact there is now always a podoscope on the fitting bus adds some extra challenges for Safety Footwear Advisors at EMMA. “In order to make a good scan, the bus must be completely level. If the bus slopes to the right, the impression of the right foot on the podoscope will be stronger and therefore unrealistic. The podoscope also requires electricity, so we search for a parking place near a socket outlet. Fortunately, if that is impossible, we always have a battery with us, allowing us to work for several hours.” Language is really important Before Hans and his colleagues had the podoscope, they identified foot ailments by visually inspecting the foot and asking specific questions. “Then, language was really important. Just try and explain in a foreign language what is bothering you … In addition to Dutch, I could already speak German and English. With that I was already able to assist most of our customers. However, I also travelled a lot around Wallonia (Belgium), where the main language is French. So, I did a two-year course in French, allowing a decent discussion with French speakers on the bus.” Even so, the advice from Hans and his colleagues was still based on assumptions, and Safety Footwear advisors are no doctors. “Thanks to the podoscope, we can add technical input to what we see with the naked eye and learn from discussions. That makes our advice stronger and demonstrates to employers that shoe fitting is really essential.” “It is greatly appreciated when I address people in their own language on the bus.” So the whole French course was not for nothing? “No, not at all! It is still greatly appreciated when I address people in their own language on the bus. It breaks the ice immediately, which means that people are more open to advice. That means that the fitting session is also more relaxed. And I love to travel. My wife and I regularly go to Indonesia, Vietnam or Thailand. Then too, it is really handy to speak different languages!”

Mon, 18 Aug 2025 16:05:00 +0200

Smart safety footwear all starts with the right protection

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/top-5-safety-shoes-for-professionals-who-value-style-and-protection

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/top-5-safety-shoes-for-professionals-who-value-style-and-protection

Work in construction, hospitality, healthcare, or industry? With one foot in the field and the other in the office The role of Trade Marketeer is new at EMMA. Luca: “I'm getting every opportunity to do it well. I'm often at trade fairs and with dealers, join sales colleagues on the road and have even been out with the fitting bus. This direct contact is so valuable to me. What is going on? What are dealers struggling with? What do they need in order to sell EMMA even better? Are there enough marketing materials? Does the range offered suit the target audience in their region? I am their point of contact for these questions and their needs. Of course, we can't do everything at once, but it all starts with knowing what's going on.” Short lines of communication, big impact Luca sees himself as the bridge between what goes on in practice and the marketing team. “The feedback I get from the dealers is something I take back to the office. It helps us make our communication more targeted and more relevant. Rather than top-down campaigns, we aim to focus more on campaigns that match what is truly going on in the market. That's the strength of this role.” “No day is the same” Luca, who is bilingual, lives just over the border in Germany, but grew up in the Netherlands. With a background in marketing and sales within construction, hospitality and events, the dynamics of the role were the reason he applied to EMMA. “I specifically wanted a pivotal role. Something in which I have human contact, enjoy being out and about and learn something new every day. I immediately see all of that at EMMA.” More than safety shoes Before starting at EMMA, Luca had already heard of the brand. “I knew that EMMA made safety shoes but, quite honestly, I didn't know much more than that. When I looked more closely, I discovered that EMMA manufactured in the Netherlands – that's special. And the sustainable vision is truly unique. It's not an anonymous multinational, but a brand with a story and roots in Limburg. And you feel it” Full schedule, open mind The first weeks were intensive, but above all informative and fun. “I felt welcome right from day one. Everyone is open to ideas and gives input. Soon, I will help in production for a day. That helps me to understand the entire process – from shoe to shelf – even better. That way, I can contribute even better in discussions with dealers and colleagues.” See you soon! “In the coming period, you'll find me in different places – at events, trade fairs and with dealers across the country. I want to get to know our dealers and their requirements better. I'm keen to visit, brainstorm about the opportunities and see what support we can offer. So it's highly likely that I'll soon be on your doorstep!” And in a year's time? “Then, I hope that dealers know: ‘if I need anything from EMMA, Luca will help me!'"

Tue, 24 Jun 2025 16:05:00 +0200

Safety footwear for facility work

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/safety-footwear-for-facility-work

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/safety-footwear-for-facility-work

The world of facilities management involves considerable moving around. Whether you’re cleaning hotel rooms, restocking supplies, or handling small technical jobs, you’re on your feet all day long, walking, lifting, and moving. That means your safety footwear not only needs to offer protection, it must also be comfortable and look professional. The right footwear strikes the perfect balance between grip, lightweight design, hygiene, and all-day comfort. Wondering what to look out for? Then read on for our 5 practical tips for safety footwear that really does what it is supposed to do: 1. Choose shoes that move with you You cover more ground than you think in facilities work, often walking for miles every day. The last thing you want is stiff, heavy shoes that make every step feel like a chore. Opt for lightweight designs with flexible soles; shoes that move with you, not against you. EMMA uses clever combinations of materials and flexible sole constructions that support smooth movement and great walking comfort – ideal for long, active days. 2. Grip is gold – especially on slippery floors A freshly mopped floor, a wet bathroom, or a slick warehouse aisle are all part of the job. But slips and trips? Definitely not. That’s why slip-resistant soles are a must. All EMMA shoes feature outsoles tested for grip. The latest slip resistance rating is SR (upgraded from the previous SRC). These soles provide maximum grip on both wet and oily surfaces. EMMA develops its own outsoles for optimal grip, rigorously tested on a variety of floor types. 3. Comfort isn’t a luxury – it’s essential When you're on your feet all day, comfort matters. It's as simple as that. That’s why ergonomics is so important; from shock-absorbing midsoles to footbeds that support your natural foot shape. This helps reduce fatigue and lowers the risk of knee, back, and foot problems. EMMA models feature breathable linings and moisture-regulating materials, making them ideal for fast-paced, active work. 4. Hygiene and appearance matter if you work in housekeeping or maintenance, as you’re often in view of guests or clients. So your shoes not only need to look tidy, they should be easy to clean, too. EMMA supplies models with smooth, dirt-repellent uppers that wipe clean in seconds. Available in white and neutral colours – perfect for the hospitality and healthcare sectors. 5. Safety also means no sore feet There’s more to safety than just a steel toecap. Well-fitting footwear prevents rubbing, blisters, and pressure points. EMMA footwear often features seamless interiors and space for orthotic insoles if needed. Tip: Pair your safety footwear with proper work socks , like EMMA’s Coolmax® polyester socks with Sanitized® treatment for extra freshness. OUR TOP 5 SAFETY FOOTWEAR FOR THE FACILITIES SECTOR Anne Anne is Lightweight, breathable, and perfectly shaped to the foot – ideal for long, active days. Are they slowly turning into soggy, steamy saunas? Sound familiar? Damp socks, blisters, and nasty odours don't exactly make working in the heat any more enjoyable. Fortunately, the right combination of safety shoes and socks can easily prevent your feet from overheating. Choose work shoes that keep your feet cool, dry, and comfortable in hot weather — without compromising on your safety at work, of course. Below, we've shared some tips on how to pick the best safety footwear to prepare you for the summer. Choose a low-cut model High-cut work boots offer extra protection, but they also trap heat around your ankles and lower legs, which can make things uncomfortably warm. Low-cut shoes allow air to circulate around your ankles, offering a much breezier feel. If your job allows it, low-cut safety shoes are perfect for hot days. Breathable materials are essential Over the course of a working day, the average shoe can cause you to lose enough moisture to fill a small glass. Ventilated footwear keeps your feet drier. Materials such as nubuck, leather, and microfibre breathe better than rubber, which helps release moisture. It's important to pay attention to the lining too; lining: polyester is an excellent choice. If the shoes feature EMMA’s Hydro-Tec® technology , it deserves bonus points. This tech absorbs and spreads moisture across the lining, where it evaporates almost instantly. Leave the thin cotton socks at home! Avoid blisters and nasty smells. Ditch thin cotton socks, as they trap moisture and cause friction. Instead, wear proper work socks made from Coolmax® polyester fibres with Sanitized® treatment. Find out why good work socks make all the difference Make sure your shoes fit properly Shoes that are too loose cause rubbing and generate unwanted heat. Pick the right model with the correct width, and use a suitable inlay sole. This not only prevents blisters, but is crucial for protecting your feet while you work. Did you know EMMA offers safety shoes in multiple width fittings? Look after your safety shoes Finished your work for the day? Air out your safety shoes, remove the inlay soles, and treat them with maintenance spray or cream. This keeps them fresher and helps them last longer. The collection of safety shoes, work textiles and PPE will soon take place under the name Green Gear Alliance (GGA). Three earths Until now, EMMA collected used shoes through the Circular Footwear Alliance (CFA) and these shoes are incorporated into new raw materials. "As a co-founder of the CFA, we are very pleased to see this expansion," says Fabian. "We have a major materials problem on our planet. If we carry on like this, we will need the resources of three earths by 2050. One solution is increasing the reuse of existing materials. The GGA makes a contribution to this." Legislation "For a large number of product groups, Extended Manufacturer Responsibility has been established by law," Fabian continues. "This means manufacturers and importers are responsible for the waste management of their products and materials. Employees carry out their work on rough ground in all weathers, using heavy materials and powerful tools. As they come into contact with sand, bricks, steel, cement and concrete, footwear for building workers needs to stand up to a very hard life indeed. That is why EMMA Safety Footwear has developed a range of safety shoes specially designed to withstand challenging work environments such as building sites. The shoes themselves are lightweight, but are still robust and offer excellent grip. In that sense, they provide the highest degree of safety, while still being comfortable to wear. Water-repellent, but still flexible and breathable. After all, professionals can only do the work that they do in the best possible conditions! Our focus on comfort The main purpose of wearing safety footwear is to ensure our safety, but comfort is still equally important! After all, if you spend your whole working day standing or walking while doing your work, the last thing you need is trouble with your feet. That is why safety footwear from EMMA Safety Footwear has been developed especially with comfort in mind. The insoles made from PU foam provide increased cushioning and the outer soles that incorporate the very latest technology distribute your weight across the front and back of your foot. Your feet will also stay fresh and hygienic thanks to the anti-bacterial treatment in the insole and the padding. Not only is that good for your well-being, but it also makes your work a lot more enjoyable! To prevent injury while not compromising on comfort, the professionals at EMMA Safety Footwear drew up a list of the top 5 safety shoes for the construction sector. OUR TOP 5 FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR CrossForce X high Extreme work requires robust safety shoes. However, not all robust safety shoes are comfortable, but the CrossForce X high is! This particular type of safety footwear is metal-free and therefore ultra lightweight, so the shoes themselves are comfortable to wear while still giving you enough room to move. Their trendy good looks, energy-return insoles and the Vibram outsole that offers ultimate grip are what make these shoes the real deal. Lukas These all-round safety shoes can withstand every challenge that a construction site can throw at them! Lukas footwear doesn't only include steel toe caps, but an extra scuff cap. The easy-twist sole makes sure that your shoe stays firmly in contact with the ground, while the special grooves in the sole ensure that most of the dirt stays on the construction site and not on your shoes. This type of shoe is available in various width measurements and is ‘ Climate Activator ’ certified (and therefore sustainable). Everon 2.0 Everon 2.0 is metal-free and therefore lightweight. That's a really great feeling when you spend long working days on your feet. What is more, its ergonomic design, its specially designed heels, the nubuck leather, the soft insole with PU foam and its perfect cushioning all play their part in making these shoes more comfortable to wear. With Everon, you can stay standing firmly on your feet, thanks to the Framework PU outsole. Merula Merula was made for people who are always outside. The fact that Elroy travels all the way from his home town of Soest to faraway Kerkrade for his work proves that his new position is very much his dream job. “In this position, my background in product development and my personal mission to make the industry more sustainable come together nicely. EMMA is an ambitious company full of challenges, with a beautiful history and an eye for social employment. It's a true jewel of the south, so I'm happy to spend those extra hours travelling to work.” In his new role, Elroy is ultimately responsible for EMMA Safety Footwear's future product range and also monitors the company's long-term direction. Elroy ensures that the company's range of safety shoes not only meets customers' needs and market demand, but that it also contributes towards the achievement of EMMA's sustainability goals. “EMMA Safety Footwear is one of the few manufacturing companies in this industry where sustainability is so ingrained in the company. This is because EMMA has been working on sustainability for more than a decade, has included sustainability in its policy plan, has a sustainability manager AND also has employees who live the sustainability mission.” Choices with an eye for the environment The fact that Elroy decided to take up a job with a company that lives and breathes sustainability comes as no surprise to us. “I'm very concerned about climate change and so I make my choices – whether personal or business-related – with the environment in mind. For example, I have been eating vegan for a year and as a family, we go on holiday by electric car or train instead of by plane. I also want my career to be about sustainability. In business, my goal is to show the world that it can be done – sustainable production in the Netherlands and serving customers in the best possible way while at the same time growing and being profitable. Not an easy task, but together with the team at EMMA, I'm rising to that challenge.” A complex puzzle To achieve Elroy's goal and EMMA's mission, product development is crucial. Elroy: “That's the reason why we're auditing the footprint of materials such as leather, steel and PU and are looking at alternatives, including bio-based PU, natural rubber and pineapple leather. We're also keeping an eye on the latest technologies to see which of them we can apply in our production operations in Kerkrade. Together with the other brands within the Hultafors Group, we have implemented some sharply defined CO2-reduction targets for 2030 and 2050. The overall picture is a complex puzzle of wishes and requirements, which we as a team are going to piece together during the next few years.” True circularity Elroy and his colleagues collaborate closely with partners in order to create a future-proof product range. “I've only been in my new job for a few weeks, so right now I'm mostly conducting familiarisation meetings with suppliers, though you could say that these meetings are more like a reunion for me, since I still know many people from my time at Dunlop Protective Footwear. I worked there for over 12 years and we produced safety boots and were therefore part of the same industry as EMMA's safety shoes. Back then, I was actually already watching EMMA Safety Footwear through the corner of my eye; I made sure I monitored their website closely and read their sustainability each year. Dunlop Protective Footwear and EMMA have many similarities; both companies are traditionally Dutch, have a history going back more than 100 years, are forerunners in sustainability and both manufacture their products in the Netherlands. The big difference is that Dunlop delivers worldwide and EMMA’s operational footprint is relatively local. If you're based in the Netherlands, producing and delivering the majority of your products in the Netherlands gives you an unprecedented advantage when it comes to achieving return logistics and therefore true circularity. The ‘Circular Footwear Alliance’ that EMMA has established with industry partners is a fantastic initiative and forms an important pillar in our strategy.”

Mon, 20 Jan 2025 11:05:00 +0100

Discover EMMA’s CrossForce collection

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/discover-emma-s-crossforce-collection

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/discover-emma-s-crossforce-collection

Unstoppable in every way Covering light industrial work to heavy duties. Under his watchful eye, the company is modernising. For example, the showroom has been fully renovated and now carries a product range that also appeals to younger people. Among the most major changes in recent times has been the addition of an EMMA wall in the store. The result of years of fine collaboration. HvO DEXIS supplies a range of products for construction and industry, from workwear to tools and from workplace necessities to company furnishings or personal protective equipment (PPE). Mainly the latter are addressed today, as we speak to branch manager Danny van Schendel about safety shoes and EMMA Safety Footwear's role in this. A world of waste and raw materials Danny was 19 years old when he went to work for a waste processor where he encountered PPE. He bought his first pair of work shoes from Henny van Ommeren B.V., a local store. It turned out to be the start of a remarkable career in the world of waste, raw materials and processes. “Through roles with various employers, including Rockwool and Suez, I became a manager. In that role, I was responsible for my employees' safety. I made sure they were wearing dust masks and proper safety shoes.” Danny was the Head of Raw Materials at RD4 and was perfectly happy there when HvO DEXIS called. “They asked whether I wanted to become a branch manager in Stein. A unique opportunity, which I seized with both hands. That was how I landed up in safety shoes, work clothing, industrial machines and road signage.” Time for a makeover What Danny immediately noticed when he started at HvO DEXIS, however, was that the company looked exactly as it did when he bought his first pair of work shoes there, over thirty years ago. “Time for a makeover!” says Danny. “I'm pragmatic in the things I do – I am a real doer. Since I started here a year and a half ago, a lot has changed. I've had the outside of the premises painted, created a wonderful reception area, rejuvenated the offices and renovated the entire showroom. The glowing centrepiece of that is the wall with EMMA Safety Footwear's safety shoes.” “I'm pragmatic in the things I do – I am a real doer. Since I started here a year and a half ago, a lot has changed.” Around the table with the manufacturer and supplier The wall Danny is talking about came about in close collaboration with EMMA. “We've been working with EMMA for years. On top of that, I'd confidently wager that we're EMMA's single point of sales in the south of the country. When customers approach EMMA directly, they refer them on to us because we have almost the entire collection here. And we naturally place a lot of orders with EMMA, to supplement our shop's stocks or meet our customers' demands. Mutual contact has been good since forever, but also continues when colleagues change. When I started at HvO DEXIS, EMMA's people were on the doorstep for an introduction within two weeks! In any case, there's very little distance between us. I can walk in the door at EMMA and vice versa. Very informal! We often go together to customers so they can see us at appointments as a team. For a customer to be sitting directly at the table with the manufacturer and supplier often makes the difference in them choosing us. We consult a lot together, keep each other up to date and are at the front of the queue with new innovations.” “When I started at HvO DEXIS, EMMA's people were on the doorstep for an introduction within two weeks!” Total peace of mind Despite all the renovations, the corporate philosophy for which HvO DEXIS is well-known remains intact. “What we do is give the customer total peace of mind,” explains Danny. “For example, we work with a permanent driver who knows the companies well, meaning he knows exactly who to report to or where he needs to deliver things. This person is aware of the arrangement made, as well as the direct point of liaison for our business contacts. Customers really enjoy that – a permanent contact. We're also well-known for our rapid delivery. The aftercare we offer is highly valued as well. Large organisations often order fifty pairs of safety shoes in one go. But that one employee who has more tricky feet or finds some irritation is sent over to us. We look at the problem, measure the feet and look for an appropriate solution.” Among the people HvO DEXIS treats not only the customer, but also its own employees in this decent way. Danny listens to his staff, keeps a good eye on what is going on, shares company developments directly and helps employees with their personal development. “I don't manage from atop a tower, but among the people. I can just as often be printing a T-shirt on the work floor as being in the showroom helping a customer with fitting, or in Amsterdam sitting around the table with a major partner. I'm ‘just’ part of the organisation, like everyone else.” HvO DEXIS' colleagues celebrate how they stand together for it every week. For example, by making fries every Thursday afternoon, drinking a beer together every Friday after working hours or making somebody's birthday truly memorable. “That's how I try to keep it fun and sociable,” Danny concludes.

Tue, 19 Nov 2024 16:16:00 +0100

EMMA IS John Scholgens

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-john-scholgens-en

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/emma-is-john-scholgens-en

Since 2019, he has been team leader in the very department where people with a labour market disadvantage put their talents to good use. “EMMA is an open and social company where everyone is equal. Attention to differences and target groups is a matter of course here and the diversity between these people is actually what makes working with them such fun.” EMMA has traditionally paid lots of attention to people with less opportunities on the labour market. That's the reason for EMMA Werkt. A department where these people do their best and which is run by John Scholgens and his colleague. He manages the employees, guides them and makes sure that the department keeps running smoothly. “For me, the nice thing about working with people with a labour market disadvantage is their enormous involvement and self-reliance. These colleague’s have a great sense of responsibility, are very dedicated and always honest. I think they're such a wonderful target group that I've now been working with them for over thirty years.” When asked why EMMA is a suitable company for someone with a labour market disadvantage, John's answer is resounding: “Because people here can all be themselves and get the chance to flourish.” Works Council In addition to his daily activities as team leader, John is also secretary of the Works Council. “I used to be in the Works Council at a very large company. So it was no surprise when I was asked a few years ago to breathe new life into the Works Council at EMMA. Of course, I immediately said yes: I have the experience and believe it's important that the voice of the people in a company is heard.” The Works Council is actually a participation council and according to John those words say it all. “We meet with the management, can issue advice, include our votes on business matters and share initiatives or ideas from employees.” John also organises the Works Council elections every four years. Retirement But the elections in spring 2025 will be John's last, because he's planning to retire. “I'm 66 now and my wife is already retired. In recent years, I've worked a two-and-a-half day week, but now I'm going to stop entirely.” John loves going out for meals with friends and wants to do more travelling. “We regularly go on holiday to Scotland and enjoy taking in some cycling races in France in our convertible. I also do lots of sport, four times a week in fact. Judo, running and mountain biking is going really well, despite my age. Maybe I'll soon do even more of that! However, some extra time with my grandchildren would also be really lovely.”

Tue, 19 Nov 2024 14:16:00 +0100

Black Friday? And that particular aspect is also good for the environment! Huh? Yep, the longer your shoes last, the less often new ones will need to be produced. THESE 5 TIPS WILL HELP YOU MAKE YOUR SAFETY SHOES LAST LONGER Clean your shoes after use It sounds logical, but this particular task is often forgotten. Mud and dirt will cause the materials in your shoes to wear out more quickly. Got home after a day at work and your shoes are soiled? Give them a clean right away! First, use a stiff brush to brush hard dirt such as mud off your shoes. Then make some soapy water out of some lukewarm water and mild soap and polish your shoes with a soft cloth or sponge. Oh, and by the way, washing machines and dryers are out of the question: using those will damage the adhesive layers in your shoes. Don't put your shoes in the shed The biggest mistake you can make is putting your damp shoes in the shed after a long day at work. If it's cold and humid in there, you will significantly shorten the life of your safety shoes. The opposite also applies: never put your shoes in front of the fire or stove, as the heat can be harmful to the adhesives holding your shoes together. So what's the most effective solution in that case? Dry your shoes in a well-ventilated place. This will prevent mould and unpleasant odours. Using shoe trees or plugs of old newspaper will help maintain the shape of your shoes and support the material. Tip: Your shoes will dry faster if you take out your insoles. Protect your shoes monthly Materials such as leather, suede or nubuck require regular maintenance to keep them supple and water-resistant. We recommend impregnating safety shoes monthly and treating them with shoe cream or leather grease. That will help the shoes stay resistant to different working conditions. Separate maintenance products are available for each type of material. For information, please see the box. Tip: Clean your safety shoes and remove the insoles and laces before treating your shoes. Check your shoes regularly Did you know that the soles and seams of your shoes will wear out first? That's why it's important to check them regularly. Do the soles still have enough grip? Worn our soles increase the risk of slipping. You should also check the seams. Are they loose anywhere? Or can you see any damage? You should also inspect the shoe as a whole. Can you see any cracks or tears in the material or is it starting to feel uncomfortable while you're wearing it? Often, these are the first sign of wear and tear or problems. Have you caught them in time? If so, you can prevent any further damage. In many cases, they can still be repaired, which means you won't have to get new safety shoes right away. Replace the insoles of your shoes How often do you replace your insoles? They absorb moisture and wear out faster than the shoe itself. That's why you should replace them at least once a year. That way, your feet can enjoy greater cushioning, hygiene and comfort, and you will be extending the life of your footwear. Did you know that EMMA Safety Footwear also sells loose insoles? With various types and models, there is always one that's suitable for your foot, shoe and work! Good to know: sometimes your safety shoes really do need replacing. With intensive use, you will need to replace them after just one year. Do not continue working if your safety shoes are worn out. That would compromise your safety and you may start to suffer physical symptoms too. A sustainable choice EMMA Safety Footwear aims to make a positive impression on the planet. Sustainability is our top priority. Wherever possible, we therefore avoid using (primary) raw materials and we also use less energy and ensure that less CO2 is released during the production of our shoes. We use reclaimed raw materials and utilise recycled materials in our new products. You too can do your bit for the good of our planet. Proper maintenance will make sure that EMMA shoes will last longer, thereby reducing the need to produce new ones. And less production means fewer raw materials and less waste. So by cleaning, treating and checking your shoes and neatly putting them away, you can reduce your ecological footprint. That's good for your wallet and also good for the environment! Is that a dream or reality? In 2024, a great deal of attention is being paid to the topic of circularity and it is also high on the agenda for us here at EMMA. Unfortunately, a circular safety shoe doesn't exist just yet. Not at the moment, anyway. Thanks to the Circular Footwear Alliance, however, you too can take a step in the right direction. As Fabian Groven, the sustainability manager at EMMA, explains. “In our communications about sustainability, we sometimes talk about circularity and what we are referring to then is a circular economy. In that type of economy, there is no waste. Each material – in our case, the materials in a safety shoe – retains its value as the material is used (and reused) for as long as possible. Unfortunately, a completely circular safety shoe doesn't exist just yet, but we're certainly making some significant steps forwards in terms of circularity, by using recycled materials for example. But that in itself doesn't make our shoes circular. After all, safety shoes are still often thrown away once they have been used, but they don't have to be!” Tens of thousands of shoes already collected “EMMA has joined forces with other safety footwear brands. Together, we have created the Circular Footwear Alliance (CFA). The CFA foundation aims to collect in as many safety shoes as possible and rescue them from landfill and we are now becoming increasingly successful at that! Right now, tens of thousands of shoes have already been collected in from more than 380 collection points. Our partner FastFeetGrinded processes the materials from the shoes into new raw materials. For now, those raw materials are being used in new applications. For example, the rubber and PU waste from our soles is granulated and then used to make playground floors.” More and more shoes are needed “Ideally, we would like to use the reclaimed raw materials to make new safety shoes, but things haven't progressed that far just yet. For that, we will need to keep experimenting – and will need to collect in even more shoes! At that point, seeking solutions will become more attractive to the production chain as a whole. In that regard, we are glad that by 2026, the suppliers of safety shoes will be required to take responsibility for the waste generated by their shoes. Even after the shoes themselves are no longer in use. Very soon, that will become a requirement under the Extended Producer Responsibility (UPV) legislation. We and our partners in the CFA are not waiting for that though – we're already working on it!” You can get involved too! “The organisation is already in place; what we need now are your used safety shoes! So join us as a customer of the CFA. It's really easy: simply sign up and order a collection box . FastFeetGrinded will take the shoes you hand in and turn them into new raw materials, so you too can make your contribution towards a circular future! And who knows, maybe the circular safety shoe is not as far off as you think!" I'm in!

Mon, 30 Sep 2024 15:07:00 +0200

Sustainability report 2023

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/sustainability-report-2023

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/sustainability-report-2023

Mon, 30 Sep 2024 11:45:00 +0200

TOP 5 FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/top-5-safety-shoes-for-the-chemical-industry

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/top-5-safety-shoes-for-the-chemical-industry

For your own safety, it is important that your clothes and shoes can handle it. EMMA Safety Footwear addresses this by offering safety shoes with coloured soles. The Vera is available with a grey, green, red, blue and yellow sole. It looks good, of course, but far more important is its functionality. Using a different coloured sole for each area in your business allows you to effectively separate shoes and activities. As an employer and an employee, you don't want to compromise on that. Find out how EMMA Safety Footwear's sturdy footwear is the backbone of workplace safety. Spark-resistant tongues, oil- and acid-resistant soles made of nitrile rubber that can withstand temperatures of 300ºC, uppers with double-stitched & heat-resistant yarn... These are a few examples of features that make safety shoes from EMMA Safety Footwear eminently suitable for the metal industry. And that is no superfluous luxury. Because working with metal often means working in extreme heat and with extreme risks. Add to this the fact that most employees in the metal industry spend long days on the job. Besides safety, comfort is therefore also a must. Good to know: almost all EMMA footwear is fitted with a Hydro-Tec® antibacterial lining. This ensures optimal absorption and drainage of moisture inside the shoe, keeping feet - even in the most challenging conditions - dry and fresh all day long. A piece of history EMMA has a long history of developing and manufacturing safety shoes for the most challenging conditions. Because that's precisely what it is. In the back of Jos's van is a fitting room that contains virtually the entire EMMA collection in every size and width. Always on the move, never a dull moment Jos' career at EMMA began several years ago. "I was working in the Customer Service department at one of EMMA's customers. Fred Cabooter was a frequent visitor and came by when colleagues needed new safety shoes. That's how I knew about EMMA. Eventually, I was made redundant. EMMA was looking for a temporary driver/advisor for the fitting bus at the time, and that's when Fred said, "Jos, this is perfect for you!" Jos was sceptical at first – the idea of dealing with feet all day was pretty unpleasant – but Fred was persistent, and Jos was eventually convinced. Four months later, when his temporary contract expired, Jos handed back the keys to the fitting bus with a heavy heart. "I really shed a tear. Those four months had been fantastic. I'd never had such a fun job. In my previous roles, I'd always been stuck in an office; now I was on the road every day, meeting lots of people." Jos' enthusiasm had not gone unnoticed at EMMA either. So an agreement was made: if one of EMMA's permanent drivers left the company, Jos would be the first to get a call. Jos doubted he would ever hear from EMMA again. But just over two months after he handed in his keys, the phone rang. Did he want to come back? But for good this time. "I didn't have to think twice." 3,000 pairs of feet a year Every year, Jos sees some 3,000 prospective wearers of EMMA shoes in his fitting bus. His mission: to make sure every one of them gets the perfect fit. "That's what I love about this job; I don't have to sell anyone anything. I can give them advice so I can really help them." "The fitting bus allows us to give our customers the best possible service," Jos continues, his eyes twinkling. Imagine you run a company with a large number of employees who all need safety shoes. You'd rather not send them all to a shop to buy their shoes. That would take up too much precious time. The fitting bus brings the shoe shop to the employees. That's much more efficient." Employees who need new safety shoes can visit Jos on the bus. "I usually start with a foot measurement and a chat about the wearer's needs. What kind of work do they do? Do they have any specific issues that we need to consider when choosing a shoe? Would they prefer a shoe or a boot? Sometimes, the employees can choose any shoe from our collection. But usually, the employer or a safety expert – often in consultation with the dealer or one of our account managers – has already made a pre-selection." The importance of fitting When we ask Jos for his best advice on choosing a good safety shoe, his answer is simple: try them on! He regularly speaks to people who bought or were given safety shoes based solely on their shoe size. "I think that's such a missed opportunity," Jos says. An employer can make an enormous difference by investing just 15 minutes in allowing employees to try on and test a shoe. Every foot is different, and so is every shoe. It goes beyond just the shoe size. Consider this: a well-fitting shoe can reduce the chance of an employee developing foot or back problems. That's better for productivity and job satisfaction." Another myth Jos would like to debunk is that lighter shoes make you less likely to get tired feet. "These days, everyone wants a light shoe, preferably with a bit of a trendy look. EMMA's new CrossForce collection is a response to this demand, but lighter really isn't always better. Sometimes, a heavier shoe offers a bit more support. Yes, it means your feet will feel a little heavier, but it can also reduce fatigue." The same idea applies when it comes to getting the best fit: the best-fitting shoe is not just a shoe that's the right size. It's the shoe that fits properly, and is appropriate for the job, and ideally, also meets the wearer's personal preferences.

Sat, 18 May 2024 16:28:00 +0200

Safety shoes and socks: a perfect pair

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/safety-shoes-and-socks-a-perfect-pair

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/safety-shoes-and-socks-a-perfect-pair

Every hard worker and anyone who regularly stands for long periods of time knows it: good safety shoes are hugely important. Not only to do your job optimally, but also for your own comfort and health. What many people don't know, however, is that work socks are just as important. A high-quality work sock provides support, absorbs moisture and increases wearing comfort. And that can really make a difference! Many employers invest in good safety shoes. Simply because it is extremely important to protect employees properly against all possible safety risks. You hear less about the importance of buying good socks to go with those shoes. And that is a shame. Because a good sock can make all the difference. Especially in terms of comfort. If you stand for long periods of time, walk a lot or perform physical labour, this will involve sweating. After all, the warmer you get, the more you perspire. This is especially true for our feet when we wear shoes. If that sweat has nowhere to go, feet become cold and damp, leading to risks: foot fungus, pressure pain, chafing or blisters. Saartje Vandewiele is the fourth generation to helm the company. Her vision? To grow big by staying small and preserving the company's roots. We spoke to Saartje about Tric's significant growth under her leadership and its partnership with EMMA Safety Footwear. "Presenting ourselves together, as a manufacturer and distributor, shows the market that we know and trust each other." When we ask Saartje to introduce Tric, she says, "We're a small company with just 16 employees. We have two physical stores that mainly sell to SMEs, but we also supply work and safety clothing to other organisations like local authorities, healthcare institutions and retail chains. We offer a wide range of clothing and footwear for various sectors, such as hospitality, construction, industry and healthcare. We offer advice on our extensive selection of standard collections, but we also offer bespoke solutions where needed, for example, if someone needs orthopaedic shoes or custom-made clothing. This allows us to provide a company's entire staff with the right clothing. " Family culture and direct communication In 2012, Saartje took her first serious steps into the family business, which was then run by her parents. "My parents were very busy, so I helped them out for a few weeks. Although it had never been my ambition to work for Tric – I studied tourism – I ended up sticking around. In 2017, I took over the reins completely." Tric has always been a family-run company, and Saartje wants to preserve those roots. They can be felt in the company's DNA and in her approach. "My husband and I handle almost all of the external sales ourselves. Companies really like having a regular contact person and being able to order all their clothing and footwear from one source. We can guarantee personal contact and flexibility, which is not always the case with bigger companies. Clients appreciate that we prefer to focus on building long-term relationships – we're not about quick targets or sales figures. But that's only possible if our suppliers share our vision. That's why close collaboration is so important to us." Growing Together One of those suppliers is EMMA Safety Footwear. "The cooperation with EMMA started before my time," Saartje tells us. "But since I took over at Tric, our cooperation has intensified, and sales have more than doubled. What do I value in a supplier? Transparent and open communication! Our relationship with Gene, our Sales Manager at EMMA, is excellent. We hold each other to account when we need to, and we can always find the right solution together. We consult each other often and offer joint advice to customers. We often also do other things together, such as putting in bids for big contracts or making joint visits. Presenting ourselves together, as a manufacturer and distributor, shows the market that we know and trust each other. But as well as that, we want to grow together, and that only works if you have commitment from both parties. We are both investing in this partnership, and it's paying off." "Presenting ourselves together, as a manufacturer and distributor, shows the market that we know and trust each other." Working sustainably Sustainability is another area where Tric and EMMA Safety Footwear are in alignment. "EMMA is leading the way in this," Saartje tells us. "It's important to me personally, but it's also important to our customers. Sustainable procurement is often a requirement, especially with local authorities and large government organisations. The fact that every EMMA shoe has a materials passport is a real selling point for customers. As is the fact that EMMA is committed to recycling safety footwear. At Tric, we're also making strides in sustainability. We collect all our wastewater, use LED lighting, and we have collection boxes for unwanted clothing and shoes in our stores. We also offer the collection boxes to our customers, which allows end users to deposit their old clothes and shoes, which we then recycle for free. Perhaps the impact made by our efforts alone isn't huge, but if all companies did little things like that, it would make a big difference!" Investing in people Saartje tells us that everything else at EMMA is a good fit for Tric, too. "We're happy with the competitive prices, the excellent quality, the wide range, and the fast delivery time. And the fact that EMMA shoes are made by people who would otherwise struggle to join the labour market is a big plus for us. I think in a similar way; I want to give everyone a chance. I don't care if my employees have qualifications or not. If they're motivated and have a good character, I want to bring them on board. Our training is done in-house by me. I continue to invest in people once they've been taken on, for example, by holding regular one-to-one meetings with them or offering training. Partly because of this, I now have 1great people around me who feel at home in our team and can champion what Tric stands for. I'm very grateful for that." "We're happy with the competitive prices, the excellent quality, the wide range, and the fast delivery time." Twelve metres of EMMA The partnership with EMMA on project sales is going so well that Saartje recently proposed expanding their collaboration to include retail sales to SMEs. "EMMA is our main brand for safety footwear, and I wanted that to be reflected in our stores. Until recently, EMMA safety shoes were displayed on the warehouse shelves alongside other shoe brands and weren't getting the attention they deserved. Together with Gene and EMMA's marketing department, we developed a shop-in-shop concept with beautifully designed display shelving in the recognisable EMMA style. Our Kuurne store now has an 'EMMA wall' spanning an impressive twelve metres, where we can showcase the shoes properly. And we noticed an immediate difference; people now reach for EMMA shoes right away!" "EMMA is our main brand for safety footwear. I want that to be reflected in our stores." Future plans There are also big plans for the Wondelgem store. "We're building new premises there at a more accessible location and hope to move into them in the summer of 2024. We want to create a shop-in-shop there too, so we're once again collaborating with EMMA for the design. This one will be even bigger and more beautiful than the one in Kuurne." When we ask Saartje about her other plans for the future, she beams. "I'm always thinking about the future. I have so many ideas! My ambition is to grow Tric steadily. I can see plenty more opportunities in both project and retail sales. There are no concrete plans yet, but I secretly look for premises from time to time. This is how I'll continue to develop Tric, just as previous generations of my family have done. I'm excited to see what the next 75 years will bring for our family and Tric!"

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 14:54:00 +0200

New standard for safety shoes

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/new-standard-for-safety-shoes-en

https://www.emmasafetyfootwear.com/news/new-standard-for-safety-shoes-en

It was well over a year ago that the new standard for safety shoes was announced.
